5 Things Women Do Daily That Harm Their Health


As part of their day-to-day routine, women have to deal with problems men can’t even begin to comprehend.
Perhaps the same is true the other way round as well, but at least men don’t have to live with that annoying Aunt Flo who keeps popping up for a visit every month. Being a woman requires a lot of sacrifice. Beauty doesn’t come easy, and there are many rituals and procedures that simply have to be done in order to look presentable.
Being a woman might just be the hardest job in the world.
Yes, everyone has to keep up their personal hygiene, but for women, these seemingly simple processes are infinitely more complicated. A shampoo is not enough to wash your hair: you need conditioner too. And water is definitely not enough to wash your face. No, to do that you need a one-hundred-step programme and a bucket-load of cosmetics: cleanser, moisturizer, exfoliant, toner, sunscreen, night cream, face serum, zit cream. And those are just a few of the essentials.
Then there is the whole waxing bit. Does body hair on a woman have any other purpose than to make life more difficult? And the bras! Those stealthy assassins who can spring up at any second and try to stab you to death with their hidden blade (read: underwire)! It’s tiring just thinking about it!
But alas, women are strong and they will persevere no matter what. They are always finding new and better and quicker ways to take good care of their bodies. But there are some things they may be doing that aren’t very good for their health. Do try to avoid these 5 daily habits, courtesy of StyleCraze: they’re causing more harm than good.
1. Wearing the same menstrual pad throughout the day
The heavy flow has to be met with frequent pad changes, probably every 2-3 hours. But during those last few days of a period, when there’s only a light spotting announcing the imminent departure of an unwelcome guest, women usually opt for keeping the same pad for prolonged periods of time. And why not, it’s only lightly spotted, and there’s no point in wasting money, now is there?
Well, you might want to rethink this strategy. It might be good on the wallet, but it isn’t any good for you. The lush, warm environment of your used pad offers the perfect conditions for microorganisms to thrive, potentially leading to infections. Experts recommend changing the sanitary towels every 5 hours.
When using tampons, the regular changes are even more important. Otherwise, you’re at risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) which could have fatal consequences.
2. Washing the vagina with soap
Of course, washing your lady bits is necessary. But, as it turns out, it’s not recommended to use soap on your vaginal area. Instead, you should try simply cleansing with water, or douching. The chemicals contained in soap can upset the natural pH of the vagina, leading to itchiness and dryness. Soap is also very effective in destroying the good bacteria that live in the vagina, thus increasing the risk of bacterial vaginosis.
3. Sleeping with a bra on
You know that myth that not wearing a bra makes for saggy breasts? Well, it’s not true. In fact, according to science, the complete opposite holds true.
The University of Besançon, France, conducted a study which followed women for 15 years. The women who volunteered for the study were aged between 18 and 35, and it was discovered that wearing a bra as “support” led to the weakening of their chest muscles. This eventually led to their breasts drooping. The bra-less subjects showed a 7mm less sagging in comparison with the bra-donning ones. In conclusion: bras are a false necessity.
“Medically, physiologically, anatomically – breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity. On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra,” said professor Rouillon, one of the lead researchers.
4. Spraying deodorant directly on our skin
Research has shown that spraying deodorant directly on the skin, a practice that is more common than the alternative, can lead to breast cancer. The toxic chemicals (aluminum, parabens, phthalates, and triclosan) contained in the deodorant can enter your bloodstream if applied in this manner. It’s understandable that you need to neutralize the armpit odor, but try to apply the spray over your clothes – it’s much safer.
5. Braving the sun without any protection
Applying sunscreen is something we often skip, as we believe we will be completely fine in the sun even without its protection. This is a big mistake, however, because the damage the sun can do to our skin is a very real threat, not something that was invented as a money-grabbing technique by the skincare companies. Sun exposure can put you at risk of skin cancer and if that’s not enough to scare you into using sunscreen, excessive exposure to sun rays can lead to premature aging!
